Rodakino is a small village located 42 kms from Rethimnon, 27 kms from Hora Sfakion and 13 kms from Fragokastello. Part of the village is located on top of a hill (called Epano Rodakino) and part of it by the beach (Kato Rodakino) .
Rethymnon is one of the most well-preserved Venetian old towns on the island of Crete. Its 16th-century buildings are stunning examples of ancient architecture, and the monolithic Fortezza reflects both European and Moorish influences.
Frangokastello is located along the coast on an arid plain with a beautiful mountain background in a remote corner of the region of Sfakia. Some say that the name Frangokastello derives from the local phrase "Kastelli Fragon" (The Castle of the Franks), while, others claim, it derives from the Italian phrase "Castel Franco" (Brave Castle).
It is probable, that the majority of those setting foot in Sfakia ( or Chora Sfakion or Hora Sfakion ) may well have walked the length of the Samaria Gorge and be one of the many muscle-aching souls on one of the ferries that travel from the mouth of the gorge, at Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakia (or Sfakion).
